- Ed Balls, Secretary of State for Children, School and Families, announces £45M in new funding to continue the support for National Challenge Schools
- National Challenge Schools are those where fewer than 30% of pupils get 5 good GCSE’s including English and maths
- Since its introduction, the number of National Challenge Schools has decreased to just 440 this year
- The new funding is allocated to Local Authorities based on the number of National Challenge Schools in their area and the challenges facing them. Funds range from £2.3M for Kent to £18,000 for South Gloucestershire, Reading and Bracknell Forest
